Trimming your bettercup stem

Your bettercup will sit lower down than a tampon but should still be fully inside your vagina. Our bodies are all different and vaginal lengths vary, so the stem is designed to be trimmed to suit you.

If you experience discomfort from the stem when moving or sitting, simply remove your bettercup and trim the stem, as designed, a little at a time.

Reinsert and check comfort before trimming again. Some customers find they need to trim the entire stem. Make sure you feel comfortable removing your cup without the stem. Practise squeezing the base of the bettercup for removal – whilst the stem is still attached – to ensure you feel confident removing it that way.

Sterilising your bettercup

Sterilise your bettercup for at least 3 minutes in boiling water before first use. Make sure the cup is fully submerged and is not touching the bottom of the pan (otherwise it can burn)

Sterilise your bettercup at the beginning and end of each period.

In between cycles store your bettercup in the breathable organic cotton pouch provided.

Inserting your bettercup

Firstly, find whatever position is most comfortable for you, whether that’s sitting on or squatting over the toilet, standing in the shower with a leg raised (the water can act as a helpful lubricant) or even lying down. All our bodies are different, so do what feels most comfortable for you. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, to allow your muscles to be fully relaxed.

There are a few ways to fold your cup, but we find the most popular is to fold the cup lengthways, in half and in half again, and hold firmly in one hand below the rim.

With the other hand – locate the vagina entrance and guide the bettercup up and slightly backwards towards your tailbone. The cup needs to remain folded until it is fully inserted, then just simply let it pop open to form the seal. Don’t worry if the cup pops open before it’s fully inserted, you’ll still be able to guide it up and into a comfortable position.

Removing your bettercup

Pinch the base of the cup to break the seal and then slowly ease the cup down and out. This should not be uncomfortable. If you experience discomfort make sure you have properly squeezed the bottom to break the seal of the cup. Do not just pull the stem – it is essential the seal is broken first.

If you come to remove your bettercup and it has moved up out of reach then insert your index finger alongside the cup to break the seal that way, then ease the cup down and pinch the base and remove once its in reach.

Emptying & cleaning your bettercup

Empty the contents in to the toilet/sink and then fully clean before reinserting. Wash with cold water to help prevent staining.

To clean before reinserting, either rinse in the sink or – if you are out and about – just wipe clean with toilet paper and then rinse at your next convenience. There are little holes below the rim of the cup which help break the vacuum on removal. Make sure these holes are fully cleaned before reinsertion.
